Two ads from lg2 and one from Cossette were voted the top ads by viewers in Radio-Canada’s third annual “Bye bye de la pub” contest, created for the broadcaster’s annual Bye Bye 2020 New Year’s Eve telecast.
More than 47,000 people cast votes for their favourites among the 29 ads that ran during the Bye Bye telecast. Sometimes described as the cultural equivalent of the Super Bowl, Quebec advertisers frequently push the creative envelope in a bid to be crowned ad of the year by the public.
Lg2’s ad for the Quebec Milk Producers (Producteurs de lait du Québec) received the most viewer votes, followed by an ad for pet retailer Mondou, which clearly spelled out that 2020 was a shitty year that couldn’t end fast enough.
Cossette’s ad for the Quebec Pig Farmers (Éleveurs de porcs du Québec) earned the third highest number of votes. The Quebec Dairy Producers and Quebec Pig Farmers also placed among the top three in the 2019 voting.
Owing to lockdown measures that prevented people from celebrating New Year’s Eve outside their home, this year’s Bye Bye telecast was the most-watched broadcast in Quebec French-language TV history, attracting more than 4.6 million viewers.
